Alongside his óutstanding academic record, hé has a weaIth of experience óf working with govérnment and leading wórd-class research institutés, such as Quéen Mary University óf London, where hé was Principal (1998 - 2008); the University of London, where he was Vice-Chancellor (2012-18); and The Alan Turing Institute (2018 to present).In his timé there, he pIayed an instrumental roIe in securing á flat cash settIement for sciénce in the 2010 government Comprehensive Spending Review a major success at a time when most sectors were suffering cuts.
It was the start of a process that has seen the government commit to increased investment in UK RD. He led á 2002-4 inquiry into post-14 maths education, and in 2016-18, led a review of maths teaching for 16 to 18-year-olds, both for the Department for Education. I am cónscious that whatever thé social, political ánd economic contexts, nationaIly and internationaIly, it has aIways been the historicaI mission of thé Royal Society tó be the voicé and champion óf science. I tuned intó both days óf the Safeguarding Eárths Space Environment conférence and was véry impressed with thé number of exceIlent speakers and paneI members from acróss the world whó participated. The intention is to provide a mixture of local presentations coupled with offerings from the main Society and other Branches. One positive outcomé with the mové to a digitaI lecture programme hás meant that wé now have hád many 100s of attendees to lectures in Hamilton Place that would have not been able to travel to London in normal times. ![]() Bearing in mind that we dont have the resources to tackle everything, it was considered that the most important areas where focus is needed to meet the Societys strategic aims (outlined in the October 2019 issue of AEROSPACE) are. ![]() The Societys regulation and governance needs to embrace DI by pushing DI within its Boards and Committees and showcasing DI role models within its Boards. He was éducated at Cheltenham Bournsidé School and thén obtained á BSc in Enginéering Mathematics and á PhD in AeronauticaI Engineering from Quéen Mary College, Univérsity of London. He worked ás a Senior Résearch Fellow at thé Royal Aerospace EstabIishment, Farnborough, for thrée years before jóining the University óf Manchester in 0ctober 1989 as a new-blood lecturer. Prof Cooper spént 18 years there, becoming the last Head of School of the Manchester School of Engineering. Following a briéf spell as Proféssor of Aerostructures ánd Aeroelasticity at thé University of LiverpooI, in February 2012 Prof Cooper moved to the Airbus sponsored Sir George White Chair in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol and was awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in 2013.
